Hedychium Aurantiacum (Ginger Lilly) 5 litre pot
Aurantiacum is much smaller than Coronarium and the leaves are thinner. It has grown as well as the white variety with a maximum height of 4/5 feet depending upon where it is in the UK. Some “Tropical” gardeners develop a microclimate within their gardens and so these very friendly plants will be much taller – they are happiest in a staggered planting “Jungle” as they like the companionship of trees above them and foliage all around them, a semi shaded but moist situation is preferred. Flowers are wonderfully fragrant and arrive in late summer in an almost violent bright Orange – this type is referred to as having “the Queens perfume”. I can say that they are hardy but they can’t sit in a cold soggy bare border as they quickly rot, so we bring ours into the dryness of the polytunnel which is completely unheated. The flowers are simply magnificent and are a real feather in the cap of any aspiring tropical gardener, who also want to feed pollinators too.

Originally gown in Nepal and other parts of Asia, so we are very impressed indeed with this exotic looking plant, which is actually very hardy! Our stock is from a grower in Scotland. They are truly spectacular and not readily available – we are so proud to add them to our stock list. Tand smells of Ginger too!
Please note! In future we will post our Ginger Lilly varieties Aurantiacum and Coronarium (Hedychium) ONLY from November through to May, as they are too heavy and tall during the late spring and early summer and unfortunately this makes the costs of postage prohibitive.
