Lamium – Silver Beacon 2 litre pot
This lovely member of the dead nettle/Lamiacea family is related to the common red nettle we have here in the borders and pasture edges at Enchanted Gardens.
This is the same plant that our rare Shrill Carder Queens immediately feed on when they emerge from their winter hibernation. Now we have been joined by the rare and endangered Brown Banded Carder too, we think this will also help to keep our populations expanding.
Beacon Silver is shade-loving, highly valued for its drought tolerance and ability to form a bright carpet of silver foliage, with rich pink blooms in spring and summer. It’s especially useful for growing beneath trees and shrubs.
It is small, growing to 15cm, the stems are finely hairy and the leaves are shimmering silver small and neat, all pollinators are drawn to them, I see them as a little low growing feast, or tough yet showy perennial groundcover.
